Frequently Asked Questions about VPS web hosting

Some of the most frequently asked questions about VPS answered...

What is VPS?

Plesk ScreenshotA Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a hosting environment that gives you your own Linux or Windows virtual machine. Each private server provides a protected area that operates as an independent server. It enables you to share the expense of hardware and network connections and to eliminate the difficulty of maintaining them. Keep in mind that although multiple VPS customers share hardware, they do not share software. It has its own, complete directory structure, and set of dedicated application software. You can restart it without affecting any other private server accounts which share the same hardware. (Top)

Do I need my own domain name?

Yes, to take advantage of any of our packages you do need to have a domain name you fully control. However, we are able to provide you with a domain registration service as you commence the purchasing process. (Top)

Do you give an uptime guarantee?

Yes, all packages come with a comprehensive service level agreement. (Top)

How quickly is my account setup?

All accounts are setup once verification has been completed, usually around 24 hours after you place the order. If you order over a weekend it may be that the account is not operational until the Monday morning. (Top)

Can I upgrade my VPS?

Yes. You can upgrade from any VPS plan to any other plan. If you are wishing to upgrade to a plan of the same Operating System (Windows or Linux – same distribution), then we can perform this so that you keep your profile. (Top)

How many VPS customers are on a single physical server?

Our Linux servers are able to run more virtual private servers than our Windows servers, as Linux uses fewer overheads (memory and CPU). The higher VPS plans have few other virtual private servers running on the same physical server as they require more resources in terms of memory and CPU. We always ensure, however, that there are more resources available than what are required, ensuring maximum performance all the time. (Top)

What is Plesk?

Plesk ScreenshotParallels Plesk is a control panel that runs on Linux and Windows that allows you to manage your virtual machine. Plesk 8.2 is not a replacement for your Virtuozzo Power Panel. It operates separately and extends the flexibility of the Power Panel with a point and click based graphical user interface to make virtual server administration as simple as possible. (Top)

What is Virtuozzo?

Parallels Virtuozzo is a server automation and virtualisation solution that creates multiple isolated Virtual Private Servers (VPSs) on a single physical server. Each VPS functions as a stand-alone server, meaning it can be rebooted independently, has its own administrative access, users, IP addresses, memory, processes, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files. (Top)

What applications can I run within the virtual server?

You can install most Web–based applications, software, and utilities within the virtual host without any modifications. Widely tested and utilised open–source and commercial applications run successfully on your private server account. Applications and services do not have to be aware of virtual private server technology. However, direct access to hardware is not available. (Top)

Applications that will not work on the virtual server

  1. Applications that require the loading of a kernel module.
  2. Applications that require a specific kernel module, or module version, that is not included in the existing distribution.
  3. Applications that require direct access to block or character devices.
  4. Applications that require NPTL. (Top)

Can I transfer a domain name from one registrar to another?

Domain name transfers are supported for all gTLDs but are not supported for ccTLDs and .name. (Top)

What is a registrar transfer?

Registrar transfers involve the transfer of an existing domain name from one registrar ("current" or "losing" registrar) to another ("sponsoring" or "gaining" registrar). (Top)

Does Virtual Server Warehouse support registrar transfers?

Virtual Server Warehouse supports the transfer of .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .tv and .cc domain names provided certain restrictions are met. Virtual Server Warehouse does not currently support transfers of all ccTLDs and .name. (Top)

What is the cost per transfer?

The standard transfer fee will be the Base Registration Fee charged per domain name within the respective TLDs. See our Price List for more information. (Top)

What do I get for the transfer fee? Is there an extension of the term of registration for transferred domains?

Virtual Server Warehouse will process your transfer request with the appropriate registry, if needed, and extend the registration term of the transferred domain name by 1 year from the expiration date of the original registration unless the 1 year extension would bring the total registration term to over 10 years. In such case, the total registration term with the extension would be limited to 10 years. (Top)

  • The domain name must have been registered for more than 60 days.
  • Authorisation Codes are required for the transfer of .com, .net, .biz, .info and .org domain names to Virtual Server Warehouse.
